The Story Behind the Recipe:
I found this recipe that my other had written in her cookbook from 1932! My mother and grandmother were wonderful bakers. We grew up in a small town with 50 Jewish families. My mother was a leader and presided over all Jewish organizations. The Jewish women of the town, did all the baking and cooking for every life cycle event, including my own wedding! My mother was used to baking large quantities so, when it came time from my son Rick's bar mitzvah, she did all the baking and drove for over two hours to get it to Fairmount temple in time. I only wish my parents were alive to see their great granddaughter becoming a bat mitzvah at Park Synagogue in April. Olivia, like her great grandmother, likes to bake and has added a few of her own original recipes to the 1932 cookbook!
Recipe:
Ingredients:
1 1/4 cup bread flour
1 teas baking power
1 teas baking soda
1/4 teas salt
1 cup chopped nuts
2 tbs butter melted
1 c sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup boiling water
2 cups chopped dates
Icing:
3 tbs boiling water
2 cups powdered sugar
1 tsp lemon extract
Instructions:
Cook at 350 degrees for 20 min.
Sift together 11/4 cup bread flour, 1 teas baking powder, i teas baking soda, and 1/4 teas salt
Mix together with 1 c chopped nuts
Add 2tbs butter melted, 1 c sugar, 1 egg, 1 tsp vanilla, 1 cup boiling water, and 2 cups chopped dates
Put in 9 by 12 pan bake
