The Story Behind the Recipe:
This is from my grandmother's cousin, Mildred, who also lived in Syracuse, New York. My siblings and I loved these cookies when we were kids and I have made them for my children as well (They also love them!).
Recipe:
Ingredients:
4 C flour
1 t baking soda
2 t baking powder
2 C sugar
2 eggs
6 T water
1 C margarine
10 T light molasses or 9 T dark molasses
½ t cinnamon
½ t nutmeg
½ t ginger
½ t cloves
3 apples cut up into small chunks
1 C light golden raisins
1 C dates cut up
Instructions:
Mix margarine, sugar, and molasses. Add eggs, spices, and 6 T water and mix by hand or mixer. Fruit goes in last and need to mix by hand. Apples go in the absolute last.
Put mixture on greased/floured pan using small eating teaspoon.
Bake at 350 degrees for about 15 - 17 minutes until brown. Cookies will be soft.
Freeze well.
