The Story Behind the Recipe:
On my father, Seymour Stromberg's side of the family, my grandmother, Dora Katz Stromberg, proud of the fact she was born in the United States, in 1899, loved to cook and bake. Her family came from Lithuania and Poland, After my grandfather, Alex Stromberg, passed away in 1972, he came from Russia, my father would bring me, the only granddaughter, to visit with her grandmother every Saturday and watch her bake and create new recipes. My Grandma Dora would try every week to get me to like her mandel bread and she made it with jam, nuts and raisins or dates. It was delicious to everyone but me, being the stubborn, spoiled child I was, I never liked it that way. Finally, my very smart Grandma created her own recipe using melted butter, Hershey's Syrup and chocolate chips. She spread her new ingredients out on the mandel bread dough before rolling it up and baking then slicing and baking again until it was a crunchy, toasty pool of chocolate deliciousness! I am sorry to say my Grandma Dora passed away 6 months after my wedding in 1982, but I still make it this way today and share this story with my daughters and grandson and other family members.
